About Alcohol and Substance Abuse

My approach to recovery from chemical abuse is based on the principles of the trans-theoretical model which is considered by many to be the “gold standard” in the both the treatment of chemical dependence and prevention of relapse.

I believe that abstinence from all illicit drugs, including alcohol, is the desired outcome of treatment. This is especially true for people who have demonstrated addictive and abusive patterns of use. Increased tolerance for chemicals, withdrawal symptoms when not using, taking larger amounts or using over longer periods than intended, and increased time spent seeking, using and recovering are indications of addictive patterns of use. Once these behaviors are demonstrated it is highly unlikely that an individual can return to “normal” use.

My approach to recovery is based on the understanding that people change in stages. I understand that relapse can be part of recovery; however, I am very convinced that relapse is only possible once a commitment to abstinence is made.

I have tremendous respect for the 12 Steps of AA, NA, etc. I know that these programs work. I also understand that there may be other approaches to recovery that may work based on the individual, the individual’s goals and the substance being abused.
